Sister2Sister return to the music charts two decades on…

19 August 2022
Written by poprepublic

Sharon and Christine Muscat tore up the global music scene in the late 90s and early 2000’s, with back to back smash hit singles including What’s a girl to do, Sister and One. The girls toured the world as opening act for Britney Spears and were one of Australia’s most successful pop acts. The won best independent single release at the 2000 ARIA awards as well for “sister”.

It was a rare thing really as Australia has never really known how to promote pop music – the labels were stacked towards pub bands and rock, but there were a few rare industry professionals that championed pop music when the industry turned its nose up at the genre.

Sharon and Christine didn’t rest on their chart success though – they went on to establish Sydney’s premiere vocal and talent school, the Sister2Sister School of singing, where many young talent people learn the craft the two girls know so well. All whilst being VJs for MTV…

For many years you would have also seen the girls expertly provide backing vocals on many tours for other artists, like Delta Goodrem as well as countless tv appearances and charity events.

Nothing’s Gonna Bring Us Down Now is their first foray into the world of their own music since 2000, and its just plainly fabulous.

Hints of Southern Sons, Rick Price and that uniquely S2S vocal brilliance makes this a current day pop killer, with a nice 90s vibe and throwback feel.

It’s produced well and you can tell the girls put a lot of thought into how this first single will be perceived.

Its a great nod to their fan base who for all intense and purposes grew up with them and the sound, and yet, its shows their maturity as performers and sets us all up for what is hopefully a slew of new music to come.

I can see this as an anthem over Sydney’s World Pride and Mardi Gras celebrations – a true treat for the global LGBTQ community to see genuine Aussie talent keeping on being fabulous. Years after many said their pop career would be “over”.

I envisage remixes by Dan Murphy, DJ Anvi, Damien Mancell, 7th Heaven, Brett Austin, Dom DeSousa and Ray Isaac to name a few – this would be a dance floor banger given the remix treatment (holla at me girls if you wanna hook up!)

Sister2Sister are slated to tour Australia later this year with UK boyband, 5ive.

Now off to go put it on repeat,   I for one have not had a song that I have wanted to play on repeat for years – so thanks Christine and Sharon, for reigniting the want to listen to music again!
