Some say the Golden Years of Pop is a term used simply as a marketing ploy to sell tickets today. One philosophy behind this method alleges a period of our lifetime developed all the best songs that could ever be written.
Another thought pattern goes something like this: They were a string of snappy rhyming tunes thrown to a voracious public who’d listen to literally anything as long as it wasn’t orchestrally over-produced, parentally approved, sugar-sweet Artists like Pat Boone, Liberace, Lawrence Welk, Doris Day, Mantovani and the like. Now just for the record, each of those examples had a significant role in the development of the music industry of their time.
Some really odd laws of musical physics come into play: “An object will not change its motion, unless a force acts on it”. (Teens getting sick of the same old stuff churned out). The 2nd one is “The force on an object is equal to its mass, times its acceleration”. (A mass rising up of great, fresh talent, uninhibited by social norms). The 3rd one is interesting, “When two objects interact, they apply forces to each other of equal magnitude and opposite direction”. (The result was new music, new artists, new record companies, and a wonderful world – so successful, they were Dancing in the Street or on the Midnight Train to Georgia).
Fundamental science aside, you’ll always be dealing with human nature. And one part of Human Nature is the amazing co-founder and member Phil Burton. Out on his own for a series of Australian gigs known as “Sweet Soul Music”, one of the dates booked for Queensland was the prestigious Twin Towns Showroom.
For whatever irrational reason, I wasn’t expecting Phil Burton’s show to be as vibrant and alive as it turned out to be. From the very first song I’m talking about. Years of working a Las Vegas room, interacting and engaging the audience, choosing the hits that blitz, and surrounding yourself with musicians who are more like magicians when it comes to making two hours vanish. An outrageously awesome night! Get aboard his soul train, the tracks are great!
